HLF Parks for People Project

Ampthill Great Park Heritage Lottery Fund Project

Project Completion

Following a busy programme of events in 2019 including the 40th anniversary celebration of author Kit Williams’ book Masquerade and culminating in the celebratory event Ampthill Experience in September 2019. The National Lottery Heritage Fund project was completed in March 2020.

The achievements between 2014 and 2020 have included:-

Revealing the Historic and Heritage significance by opening up views, installing interpretation panels, providing trails and informative maps, making available education packs and holding a community archaeological dig and a series of guided heritage walks.

We have enlarged areas of acid grassland and planted new trees, introduced grazing and restored hedges.

Car parks have been improved and new footpaths installed to improve access. An all-terrain buggy is now available to explore the wider park area.

The Friends Group and Conservation Volunteers have contributed significantly to the improvements to the park and activities and events that have been available during the project. We have also been able to support local businesses who have used the park as a base to offer activities including Nordic walking, Forest School, Foraging, and Boot Camps.

We have continued to host the Ampthill Festivals working closely with the Ampthill Festival  and Ampthill Fireworks Committees who do an amazing job to organise and manage the 3 days of Summer Festivals and November Fireworks Display.

The Greensand Trust (GST) have delivered a lot of the improvements duringthe project period, the council will continue to work in partnership with the GST to provide continuous improvements and ensure the Lottery Funded works leave a lasting legacy for visitors to the park.
